Wireless Setup Help
 

These wireless things are a nightmare :lol: Can't seem to get it working. I've got a Linksys Wireless G Gateway. Just got a new laptop which says its wireless enabled. But when I search for the wireless network I already have set up, it finds nothing :?
I tried removing the encryption on the network and tried setting it up manually but it still couldn't find it.

Should my router be working, or do I need to get one that specifically works with my new laptop :?:

Have you enabled wireless on the router and on the laptop? Even if the wireless network is encrypted the laptop will still see it, it just won;t be able to connect to it.

Yeh and I've ran the network setup wizard. Would it matter if the old laptop is still connected?

Check the settings of your router to see if 'broadcast SSID' (or similar wording) is enabled. If it's disabled your laptop won't be able to search & find it, you'd have to configure everything manually.

There's often a hardware button you need to press to enable wireless, sometimes a tiny slider on the front or recessed button. The windows wireless thing won't tell you this, it will just say there's none available.

I have the same problem with a wireless laptop and a d,link router thingymebob

I says signal strength is excellent and it picks up next doors security enabled network as well but I cant get onto any websites.

I have given up on it, it is a dust gatherer now.

:oops: Yeah I realized that yesterday. Its a wee button above the keyboard. Problem is, every time I start up the laptop, the wireless is switched of, so I have to press the button then get windows to "fix" the problem :roll:
Is there anyway to keep it on permanently :?:

You could try checking the settings in the BIOS before the laptop boots to Windows. There may be a setting in there that controls whether the wireless device is enabled at the bootup stage, and you might be able to change the setting to 'always on'.

i currently have a D-Link set up for my house ........had problems for the first couple of days could'nt get any joy out of it .....so i phoned D-Link to ask for advice.....how stupid did i feel :oops:
i did'nt realise that you have to configure the router manually by physically connecting it to a PC or laptop...just until the router picks up the connection and detects your settings....then the settings are stored online...hey presto...disconnect the cables and you are wireless....kind of makes sense when you think about it
