Can I hoover an air filter?
 

Mr Haynes says to blow the dirt out from the engine side but I don't have an air blowing device so can I suck it from the other side using a hoover?

It's not the SV filter, it's the wife's CBR125 filter which looks like this...

All the filters i've had say you should use tap water from the clean side, and compressed air will damage it. (K&N and green cotton car filters).

Stock filters for most bikes are not "washable" as I understand it. It'd be a shame to turn the filter into a piece of artwork....

Should've mentioned it's the stock Honda item. The K&N one in the picture is just that, a picture!

Wouldn't have washed it though, although it's not like I can say 'I'm not that stupid' because I am exactly that stupid...

Yes, vacuum cleaner is just the ticket.

Air filter elements last a lot longer than the normal recommended change interval under typical UK conditions. What does for them is fine dust from unsurfaced roads, or even worse heavy industrial smoke pollution like the old "smog".

An air filter will be fine for 20-30k miles in the UK.

You can use a hoover but an compressed air will get into the fibre and get the bits you can't see.

Take it to a garage and use the compressor for tyres. If it's the manual type and not the auto type it will do fine.
