Re: My new build desktop dont work!!!!! @*$%%% !!!!!
I'd suspect they built it with a standard ps2 keyboard & mouse (generally a green and purple round socket on the back) and not the USB items, perhaps your make of keyboard & mouse isn't supported as standard and needs specific drivers for XP (although these days that's a little unusual), these should have come wqith the devices, if you didn't get the disc then have a look at the manufactorers website for info or maybe downloads.
Cheers Mark. |

Go back and use it as a £600 negotiation tool. |

You will look a bit silly when you take it back and it all works on standard PS/2 kit. But saying that if it was built using USB (I very much doubt that) then was it done on USB 1 or 2, are your KyBd & Rat USB 1 or 2  Rat shouldn't matter so much but the KyBd will as it needs power, not all USB ports provide power. If the PCs MB has multiple ports (some front, some back), have you tried using different ports. Have you tried a normal KyBd but a USB mouse and other way round |
Re: My new build desktop dont work!!!!! @*$%%% !!!!!
took it back.........twice.......
it was built with a ps mouse kb, but i told them i had usb stuff when they built it. took it back first time and he set it up properly with the usb stuff, got it home and it still wouldnt recognise the usb stuff without the ps2 ones in , so tole them that i didnt want a £600 picture frame, and that if it wasnt fixed today im returning it unfit for purpose and cancelling the cheque. so they flattened the OS and reinstalled it and now it appears to be ok, they suggesteed that possibly the clone they built it from might be corrupt. seems ok, was really fast, , right up till i put the AV on........... i didnt realise not all usbs can provide power? whys this?, is this poss the reason that my wireless mouse dongle is only recognised in the front ports and not the rear ones, or is that another bug?? |

2) If the drivers were installed whilst the dongle was in the front ports, there's a chance that they will only work on the specific USB ID assigned at the time (there'll probably be an entry to change somewhere in the registry). The easiest solution is to plug it in the back and re-install the drivers. You can navigate around Windows with only the keyboard whilst installing. Look for underlined letters in a word, hold the ALT key and press the letter, it's the same as clicking on the button with the writing on it. There are more keyboard shortcuts, but the TAB button will help you navigate too. Failing that, phone the shop, and tell them that it doesn't work as you want it to, so they can either come to your house & fix it (as it costs you to keep taking it back to them), or revert to your original plan of cancelling the cheque. PS. The "clone it was built from is corrupt" is the technical way of saying "we don't know what happened, but it's fixed now." |

EDIT: sorry, just thought ... how many USB devices you got plugged in and what is the power rating (wattage) of the PSU? HTH, Pete |
