Re: Engine Noisy, died and wont start

As I say youll see a valve stuck open because its clearance to the cam will be much bigger than the manual figure...

Re: Nagging doubts

If you do want to pressure test the system just connect a foot pump to the radiator overflow pipe. I test my old car like this but am careful to keep the pressure at sensible levels as obviously the...

Re: Nagging doubts

Thats almost how the system works except the rad must be completely full then as the engine heats up the coolant expands and opens the rad cap valve to discharge excess to reservoir. As you say on...

Re: Engine Noisy, died and wont start

yes problem definitely top end of engine as nothing below piston will cause loss of compression. Check the valves are all still operational....

Re: Engine Noisy, died and wont start

The chain looks a bit lose on the top sprocket? Now you need to get the engine to the TDC mark and follow the manual for checking the cam positions are correct...

Re: Engine Noisy, died and wont start

Yes its looking very much like the valve timing has slipped for some reason, most likely a slack timing chain and you should be able to see this when the cam cover is removed. I think you'll also see...

Re: Engine Noisy, died and wont start

I would take the sparkplugs out and with a finger over the hole see if theres compression produced when spinning on the starter - I suspect the front cylinder wont

Re: Fuel pump

Yes I wouldnt have though fuel should run through as the drawing in the free online workshop manual shows a spring loaded non return valve in the outlet which should need some pressure to overcome...

Re: Tyre pressure discrepancy

Yes think tyre manufacturer has got to be the reference but saying that their figure must be for the worst case scenario ie. heaviest bike that tyre would be fitted to and two up with luggage so if...

Re: Cam chain tensioner - no slot??

Well if anyone else is doing this job and wants to take out all 4 cams at the same time (best to enable mixing and matching of shims) I strongly recommend marking the chains at the right positions....

Re: Cam chain tensioner - no slot??

If you took all 4 cams out at the same time how did you know the crank was in the right position when putting them back in? As I say the crank mark comes round twice for every revolution of the cam...

Re: Cam chain tensioner - no slot??

Yes good point and it reminded me of a Suzuki vee twin I did recently (not SV) where I got in a right pickle. I think youre supposed to do one cylinder at a time and I would recommend this as I tried...

Re: Cam chain tensioner - no slot??

oh and if your lucky and very careful (go round them with a feeler gauge or something before lifting off) you might be able to reuse the cam cover rubber gaskets which I think are quite expensive to...

Re: Cam chain tensioner - no slot??

Have a good read of the manual beforehand and you'll be fine. Its just a case of marking and recording everything as it comes apart, not letting the chain go loose back down in the barrels, not...

Re: Cam chain tensioner - no slot??

Thats quite possible as a vee twin doesnt usually get revved as much as some other configurations so if ridden sensibly the clearances wont change much...

Re: tighter or looser?

I think the confusion is because both can happen in different cases. If theres valve recession then they will get tighter but if not and you do a lot of high revving miles the shim can get a wear...

Re: Euro 5+ article

I think theres an element of 'weve all got to do our bit' so regardless of how much each transport sector contributes to the problem its hit with the same rules. Must admit I can imagine the outcry...

Re: carbon fuel tank vent cartridge

Isnt 5 in the diagram the inlet/exhaust of the cannister? If its removed then the other two pipes (9 & 11) coming from the system can just vent to atmosphere but of course will give more petrol...
