Even letting the clutch out slowly is not as good as a decent blip. It's all fine if you're never going to change down with any enthusiasm, if the revs are low the engine doesn't have as many revs to make up when you reengage the clutch. If all you do is bimble along and change down once you've already finished braking then you can forget about it, it won't make any difference to you really.
