As millions paid respect to Britain's war dead today, one elderly veteran was recovering in hospital after being beaten up by burglars in his home.
Bob Schofield, 89, was attacked with an "obscene" level of violence in front of his wife, Mollie, 87, after he confronted the intruders,
Mr Schofield was asleep with his wife Mollie, 87, when the couple were disturbed.

They were found hours later on Monday bleeding on the floor at their cottage.

Officers arrested 16 men on Friday in an operation in the Blackpool area.

Acting Detective Inspector Dave Groombridge, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a planned police operation made in connection with one of a number of lines of inquiry.

"Information gleaned will be analysed and further action may result. Two of the detained men are wanted in connection with other matters and will be escorted to other parts of the UK.

"The police will continue to actively pursue all avenues of the investigation and we urge anyone with information to contact us directly or call Crimestoppers."

He added: "Bob and Mollie continue to improve after their ordeal and have received numerous wishes of support and encouragement from across the country. Family members have asked that their heartfelt thanks are made to all for the messages of support."

Mr Schofield served in the Royal Navy on the notorious North Atlantic convoys taking aid to Britain's allies in Russia. He battled mountainous seas and enemy attack crewing escort ships on the missions across the North Sea from Scapa Flow to Murmansk.

The couple were asleep in bed at their home in Salterforth, Pendle, Lancashire, in the early hours of Monday, when they were disturbed.

Mr Schofield confronted the attackers and was beaten repeatedly, Lancashire Police said.

Acting Detective Inspector Dave Groombridge said: "This is a deplorable offence, committed against an elderly defenceless couple in their own home.

"It's hard to imagine a more heartless, cowardly and despicable occurrence and detectives will leave no stone unturned in their efforts to find those responsible.

"Bob is 89 years of age and can't have been a serious threat to anyone. The level of violence used is obscene and I appeal to anyone with knowledge of the offence or the identity of the offenders to come forward.

"Even those in or on the periphery of crime cannot surely condone this behaviour and I particularly appeal to the criminal fraternity to call time on this and do what is right."

Neighbours noticed the curtains were still drawn at the couple's home yesterday morning, which was unusual, and raised the alarm.

Relatives arrived to find the couple still lying shocked and injured.

They are now both in Airedale Hospital near Keighley, West Yorkshire, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Police said offences of this type are rare and increased policing patrols are taking place to reassure the community in Pendle.

That must be an old report, but even so it is totally sickening. People who do stuff like this need some serious punishment and not the few months in prison they are likely to get.

@madness - agreed, it must be old-ish as I saw a facebook group protesting about this poor guy's treatment a couple of days ago. The people who do this sort of thing must have a screw or two loose, crazy

Seen that before, very wrong.

When I see things like this, I always wonder if the people who did it have grand-parents. Respect for the elderly is severely lacking in today's society.
