I can't see them surviving long, once people learn where they're located. There's a reason why ours are on top of tall poles.

Australia has a history of sneakily hiding speed cameras. They've even put them inside wheelie bins.

I am sure that I have seen a website where people proudly take their photos next to vandalised cameras, these look even easier to break.

I seem to recall that the placing of a petrol filled tyre over the camera and then adding a source of ignition does a good job.

Glad I am in the UK where they have to play a little fairer with camera placement, still don't like them though.

As an aside here, do the average speed cameras on the motorways get bikes too, given that they point at the front of the vehicle, or are there other ways they can do us? (Jayney has not been speeding through the road works outside of Bristol, honest Guv, oh no not her...)

As far as I'm aware the average speed cameras can't be used to catch bikers because they don't record the number plate or speed. But if the operators see a bike regularly racing through roadworks they can ask a marked vehicle to wait around and pull you in the normal way.

Perhaps someone like Pete can confirm this.

Keith.

Average speed cameras work on APNR number plate recognition. When two cameras have successfully read the same number plate, and the distance/time calculation shows that number plate has travelled above an average speed, only then does it store a picture of the offending vehicle.

If you go through average speed cameras in or on any vehicle where they can't read the number plate, the system doesn't even realise you have been there.

Check to see if your local speed camera partnership still exists. If not your local fixed cameras probably won't even be in use.

That is pure money making, at least ours claim to want to reduce speed not make money

We actually have some relatively near us on the A24, they are near an accident black spot and I quite like them because all the locals slow down and make it safer, that is what they are supposed to be used for, not just to get extra revenue.
