Default One In Five Young Drivers Uninsured

Heard this on the news today and quite frankly found it horrifying!

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukp...em9LuFivAAntuw

As for them 'not knowing insurance was needed' ! Honestly, does anyone really believe that?

How do you feel about these statistics and about the possibility of being hit by an uninsured driver?

I was really really shocked!! Heard it on Radio 1.

The young guy said: 'I couldn't afford it, but I knew I was a good and safe driver'

What a knob!!!

Im not one of them (luckily, im a good boy)

But i can see why young people do it, my first ever car insurance, £2000! TPFT on a 1.4 8v bog standard 1998 ford escort worth £1000 if that.

And being hit by an uninsured driver also worries me as i dont really know much about it and how much protection (law, me getting paid for the damage etc) there is for me if i am hit by one

TBH it doesn't surprise me in the least. Friends of kitkats daughter at college haven't got a clue about MOT tax etc.

The other thing is some may see it as an acceptable risk considering the cost of insurance and the likely fine. Insurance is incredibly high for young drivers. Here's an example my ex's son bought an old Pug 205 (1.1 engine) as his 1st car last year and the insurance was over £1400 TPFT and that was after he had done the passplus course and car kept on his driveway

the problem is the punishment for being uninsured is a fine which is a fraction of the cost of the actual insurance. And that's only if you're caught. So it boils down to a simple financial decision - one which the powers that be appear to be too stupid to address.

Not surprised one bit, have you seen how much it costs?? It wont go down until you have experience but you cant get the experience because you cant afford to pay for the insurance in the first place. Make the insurance cheaper and you'll lower the number of people with out insurance.

Who makes up these figures, and how do they know?
Reminds me of the t0sser who claimed that a huge proportion of bikers didnt pay their road tax. That was complete carp as well.

The cheapest way to get on the insurance ladder is to run an old banger on classic insurance.

Guaranteed to learn some basic maintenance then, too

But then there's the problem of it potentially not being reliable enough to use for commuting
