Helmet sizing - going from Arai to Shuberth

Whilst I love my Arai RX7, it is not a great all weather winter helmet. it is BLOODY noisy, and not the warmest either. I am also destroying it by constant riding in rubbish weather, to the point where it needs a new lining and cheek pieces really.

I popped into George White over the weekend and tried on a Shuberth S1 Pro. Having read reviews on this lid, it sounds perfect for my winter / touring riding. Quiet, integrated sun visor (very handy, had one on my old Caberg). Problem is I'm so used to my Arai, I can't decide whether to get medium or small. I take a medium Arai which fits very well (after the break in period). Now the Shuberth medium fits very nicely, but I'm worried it will loosen off too much with use. The small fits OK, but is bit tight at some point.

Has anyone else gone from an Arai to Schuberth and how did you find the sizing?

In general, if it fits ok when you try it on new, you should opt to a lower size. My Shark hurt a lot when I tried it on in the shop but now it is perfect! I'd go with what actually feels right in the shop rather than which brand is allegedly bigger or smaller than the other knowledge.

My Shoei Raid 2 is a medium, same as Sarah's, and you know she's a massive big head

Any other hats of mine she can't fit on.

Now my Shoei feels loose and hers tight on me. To cut the story short, I'd always buy in a shop where I could try on.

I've had a S1 for a couple of years now. It hasn't loosened off noticeably. Schuberth helmets have traditionally been a rather odd shape, I found it a bit tight at the forehead (short front to back) but I have eased that with tweaking the lining.

The sunvisor is great, note you can turn them upside down to give a straight bottom edge rather than the "aviator" cutout style.

Noise is better than most helmets but not that great, I still use earplugs for anything other than a short hop.

Note also that the S1 Pro scored very poorly in the SHARP ratings, though there was a lot of controversy about how this helmet was tested (fit of the "head" wasn't correct by all accounts).

The Schuberth C3 flip-front seems to have revised the head shape issue, but read the reviews here and it appears there are serious shortcomings.

I'm happy with my S1 but I'm very undecided whether I can recommend them based on the above. In terms of build quality I reckon they are a shade behind Arai and Shoei but still good standard of materials.

That was an interesting article about the C3... I think there may be two slightly different versions out there, because there is a guy in my IAM group who has similar visor issues, while mine feels like trying to operate a signal box one handed (to the point where I can't always clip it down one handed)

I've just gone from a Shoei Raid II to a Shuberth R1. Even though I had a medium Shoei, I needed a small Shuberth. The R1 is a lovely lid. I thought that the Raid II was great, but this is even better. It's much quieter, has better field of vision and the integral sun visor is really useful.

Interesting. How recent is yours? Date should be marked somewhere, I think it's a sticker inside under the lining on my S1 (Arai it was stamped into the strap cover). Could be they've fixed some of the issues.

No sign of anything obvious on the inner shell, apart from being a 56-59 shell with 56/7 lining in

hi, iv got the Shuberth S1 Pro. its been 1 of the best helmets iv payed for. the size has been ok for me 14 months old... I'm shore the shop you get it from will help you
