Default Ignition dead?

Just went out to go to work, turned key in the ignition...and nothing.

The alarm is switching on and off fine, I know the battery is good (it's a newish Yuasa and not had any problems with it). The ignition barrel works fine between 'lock' and 'off' (i.e. the steering lock works), but when I turn it to 'on' there is nothing: no lights, no horn, no fuel pump. Even when I try to put the alarm into service mode (by holding down the main button while ignition is on) it won't do it, it just switches the alarm back on.

When I turn the ignition on with the alarm active, it doesn't set the alarm off (although the motion sensor is still working). It's as if the alarm does not sense the ignition is on.

The ignition has been a bit sticky before, but I've never had a problem once I've managed to turn the key.

Any idea what this could be, or does it sound like something in the ignition has gone? It was working fine last night when I came home from work

Jo
P.s. And before anyone suggests it...yes I've checked the kill switch.

Agreed. Check the main 30amp fuse.

After a 'where the hell are the fuses' moment, I dug out my Haynes manual and went to check them.

They all seem fine. A couple of them (the fuel pump one, and the 30amp one marked 'B' (whatever that means)) set the alarm off when I removed them, but the bike still shows no sign of life.

In an assumption that the 30amp fuse marked 'M' is the main, and the one marked 'B' is a backup, I swapped them, but still nothing happening (not surprising as they both looked ok).

Just to clarify; the main fuse isn't in the box with the rest of the fuses, it's on the starter solenoid under the right hand side panel.
Have you checked that one?

Ian

I've checked the two 30 amp fuses under the main seat (marked 'M' and 'B') and these are ok. I've also checked all the fuses under the rear seat. Are there more under a panel somewhere then?

No, that's them all, just wanted to be sure as some aren't aware that not all the fuses are in the box.
Next steps:
Wiggle the key, do the parking lights work? Have you got a Datatool? If yes can you use it's hazard light function? If yes then the battery obviously has enough in it to light the tell tales. Get the seat off and check the battery connections, and if possible put a meter, (or even just a bulb), across the battery terminals to make sure the battery hasn't committed Hari-Kiri - it may be near new and it may have worked fine recently but stranger things have happened.
Further than that you'll need to check security of various connectors between battery and ignition switch.

A somewhat late reply but...the alarm is flashing the indicators when switched on and off, and the battery seems fine. I think it must be something to do with the wiring between the ignition and the gubbins under the seat.

Essential Rubber are fully booked for the next two weeks so can anyone recommend another garage in London (really has to be north, west or central, as I have to get the bike taken there) that deals with electrickery?

I did think of Spannerman, but have realised that's not really an option as, even if the AA will take the bike there, it's a right pain for me to get over there to collect it again.
