For about a week I've had what I can only describe as a rattling noise coming from the top end of the engine somewhere. This only happens while the engine is cold. It's not a ticking noise like tappets but a very clear rattle/vibration. At first I thought something was vibrating but after having checked it's definately coming from the top end of the motor. You can hear it a good way away from the bike. When you blip the throttle the rattle comes and goes and only seems to happen mostly when idling. My bike has done a few miles now (28'000) but I regularly change the oil/filter (every 3'000 miles) I've not yet had the valve clearances checked but usure what else it could be. The problem just appeared literally overnight. Oil level is good and bike only does about 10-15 miles a day at most.
Any ideas? EDIT: I'm thinking perhaps it's the clutch basket. Will check if it only does it in neutral. I'm hoping it is the clutch as that's an easier fix than motor internals. Last edited by DanAbnormal; 09-08-10 at 08:20 AM. |

Bikes will rattle, some worse than others when started from cold as it takes a little while for the oil to get upto pressure.
Check to see if the noise is still present with the clutch pulled in. Cam chain tension, valve clearances (rears do often need adjustment at 15k if they have never been done then get them checked!..aside from the fact that a noisy clearance tends to be a "happy" one). |

Thanks, the only thing I can say is that it didn't do it over a week ago. Never rattled but had slight ticking noise (as it still does). This rattle however is loud but only on idle. Will check the clutch at lunch.

Right, interestingly it doesn't do it from cold but starts when the engine is at 35/36 degrees and carries on until about 65 degrees after which it vanishes. Pulling the clutch in makes no difference to the noise. Weird.

Do what you usually do to fix your bikes: hit it with a hammer

Sounds like my old Honda, when the camchain tensioner started to go. Get it sorted quick

I may as well have. I've not ridden the bike for fun since last AR I think. It's purely a means to an end at the moment. I do 10 miles to work each day and that's my lot. Sure wish I could enjoy it again but there are just way too many idiots on the road.
