Default New here and would like SV buying advice.

Hi Guys, I have just registered this morning. I have had a license since 03 but not had a bike since my RGV250L in 04. Looking to get an SV650S in about a month and was looking for some buying advice. I am looking to get the newest I can afford, and from a dealership. What should I look/listen for when going to buy, and what should I avoid? Do I need to HPI even if it's from a dealer?

Should imagine the dealer would do a HPI for you, or they wouldve done one when they purchased/part ex'd the bike previously.

just try and haggle as much as you can, should come with a fresh oil change and possibly plugs too,
also, if the engine is making a bad ticking noise when under load and it changes with the revs/load on the engine, then id get them to replace cam chain tensioners, or at least check them over,

good luck mate and hope you get the SV that your after.

EDIT: Welcome by the way

firstly How dooo!

I'd do an HPI anyways as some dealers won't show you them and for the sake of £20 (or beer to a friend in the auto trade) do one.
Make sure the motor is cold when you turn it over and have a listen. Also if its near to a service (3.5k, 7k major, 11.5k and 15k Major for tappets) try and haggle the price down or get it as part of the deal.

CCT's are noisy on the SV's but a tom said ticking is the sign for a replacement

I was going to ask that, if the ticking is just an annoyance or if it's something that should be looked at? Is there any particular company you would recommend for doing HPI checks? Also, I saw in another section about Essex meets, is there anything in Suffolk you guys know of?

I've seen K5 SVS for £2.5K privately, long as the bike has service history for the 15K service, valve clearances, it should be worth a go. Don't buy bikes from people who like stunts, the SV can suffer engine damage if monowheeled.

So would it be best to avoid a bike of there isn't any/much service history?

depends, low miles with no service history wouldn't worry me, but then i mostly buy cheap pre-crashed bikes.

it's the usual, oil filter shouldn't be too road corroded if they claim a recent service, no mayo in the oil, etc, etc.

Hi Guys, order put in for SV650S K7, 2008 with 4813 miles on the clock. Full service history and very clean. All going well with paperwork, should be getting next weekend!

Oh, and if anyone is interested, that's a 2005 SV650S parked next door, black with lowers, Remus end can and K&N Filter. £3000 all in with alarm, oh and nearly 14000 miles!

Considering a couple of extras, just need some opinions. Oil and rad covers and a fenda extenda. Worth it? Also, never used a scottoiler before, are they any good?
