Called up the insurance company just to settle the mind, turns out I WAS insured, as they give your a fews hours leeway to change over the bike. And was completely LEGAL as the insurance database would show as covered.

So when exchanging your old bike for a new one, just cover all details with the insurers to avoid any doubt.

Typically an insurance company will cover you for 2weeks following the change over. I asked a similar question to my insurance company when selling a clio a few years back. I was picking up my new car mid week but not taking the Clio to it's new owner until the following weekend, they informed me I'd be covered on both for the next two weeks as standard procedure.

I guess in theory you were riding uninsured.
Perhaps the best thing to have done would have been to phone the insurance and change it over once you'd got there to pick it up.

EDIT *or as owen says above

It depends when they changed it over.

Quite legal for you to arrange with them a time for the policies to swap over.

That's their procedure though, I would certainly not count on it being any sort of industry standard.

You don't get any leeway for the offence so it's your problem to talk to the company and make sure you're legal.

I've always changed/activated policies after i've bought the car/bike. If buying private and you got 3rd party on other said vehicle just tell the owner not to cancel or change anything until you've got home so you are covered under your own 3rd party cover.

Please change the title to...

"Did I just do something that may have been illegal and am now reporting it on the public internet"

Thanks

You can't do that as your will drive/ride something you have just bought (now own) and the 3rd party will not cover you.

You'd probably get away with it near home, you're "test riding it".

But I've never bothered, it's not hard to talk to your insurance company and get them to change it over at the proper time or allow a bit of an overlap.

Couldn't you have changed the initial post to a hypothetical post? This may have been quite useful.
