I recently purchased a nice condition SV650SY 2000 in yellow ofcourse and it'd been sat around in the showroom at a Car dealership not on any kind of charge since they took it 9 months ago in a part exchange. The bike has a Datatool 3 Alarm on it which was left armed obviously as it sat in the corner of the showroom.
Either way when we took my baby home and she was sold as a non starter as even when we puit a powerpack on the battery in the showroom she just wouldn't start. Wanted to just wouldn't. Either way an afternoon of work and about £5 of Carb cleaner cleaned spark plugs she finally fired on the front cylinder then the rear. She was alive. My Uncle who was the guy I worked on it with has an Optimate and put the bike on this and ridden to get it used to being ridden. New Tires and Chain but she wouldn't start without the jump almost everytime. I have got a New Battery coming tomorrow. This'll hopefully solve the issue, is there a chance the issue could be deeper than this? The Bike'll be regularly run as shes now my main form of transport around the Devonshire Countryside, not a bad place to ride ![]() Also Hi to the Forums, I'm New ![]() |

Hi, and welcome.
Hopefully it's only your battery. After a long period of being drained they are usually beyond recovery, even with an Optimate. The other problem with long standing is that the fuel in the carbs evaporates of and can leave a varnish like residue which sometimes blocks or partially blocks the jets, especially the smallest pilot jets which mainly affect the tickover and small throttle openings. This problem often resolves itself in normal use once you have had fresh petrol running through for a while. |

We've checked all of that she after a bit was a lot happier. especially with a new tank of fuel and she's now on her third tank of fresh fuel and with each one feels smoother and more willing to perform. I hope so to, going to go fit the new battery now. Hope the issue'll be resolved with that.

I'd check with a multimeter that the new battery is getting sufficient charging voltage, just to set your mind at rest that the issue is resolved. With the bike being stood for so long it probably is just the battery that is fubared but worth making sure.

If it's the original battery too it will be well beyond normal sell by date by now. My 2000's battery lives on an Optimate and was starting to flash up "weak" so got replaced last year as a precaution. A good service and a carb balance would not go amiss of course as it's been standing a while...
