Hi sv folks, I decided to service my baby today. Changing the oil and the oil filter was quite easy.
When i had filled up the oil the oil level on the glass was slightly above the full mark. I read somewhere that you have to put 2.7L after an oil and filter change. After looking at the oil container which was a 4L container it showed 1.2L remaining, which means i must have used 2.8L of oil. Would this extra 0.1L of oil possibly hurt my bike? ![]() |

My Curvy doesn't even like being at the full line never mind over it. Caused problems changing gears on mine, I'm sure someone will tell you if it actually causes damage but i'd drain some out & aim for half way between empty & full. As long as you use a clean container you can reuse the stuff you drain out if you can't get only a bit out.

For 100cc of oil I wouldn't bother, this thing about 1/2 way on the site glass? does the manufacturer show a full mark and recommend that when servicing? sorry but that reasoning baffles me as to why you would not use the recommended levels. If I had any vehicle serviced and the dip stick or level was not to the full mark i would want a very clever explanation

i always run all my vehicles on or even just above the full mark with out any problems, and i always find its a job to get a realy acurate level with a window, as if you are not on level ground and upright you will get a different reading and also on my air oil cooled motors they can when hot use up to a mil a mile this isnt burning oil but evaporation from calling hot pistons and on a long weekend run doing 750 miles do i take a litre off oil with me or do i put enough in just incase it uses some oil,in practice it rarely uses that much, but this way the level never gets down to the add mark

If you want to drop a 100ml of oil without mess, don't remove it, but just back the filter off a few turns with a suitable container underneath.
Don't try to do the same with the sump plug - you need to remove the plug entirely to get oil out that way and trying to get it back in will see oil everywhere.

Syringe? I know it's already been delt with but thats what I used to use on my old RS, comes in handy owning a few industrial ones, topping up or changing brake fluid is quick & clean.

Yep thats the easiest way like Sid said, unless your nifty with the drain plug, you'll drop a load more than 100ml if you attempt it.
Also i agree with HoL on the gear probs when oil at max, i had that happen on my Bandit 1200, difficulty changing gear if your a tiny bit over max, i just kept it at half way and it was fine. |
