Hi all, been off for a while. Lack of money, ill health and life in general put a stop to things but we've now managed to get some mods done to CurvySmerv, my SV, - woohoo! - and we've now finally reached the stage where we are actually ready to get the exhaust sorted so, before I list the mods already done, I wonder if somebody could answer this (probably daft) question....I've got my eye on a can that is apparently 51mm at the inlet, however my link pipe (already purchased and supposed to be specifically for a 99 SV) is also 51mm. Is there any way of joining these two together or should I forget the can and find one with a slightly bigger inlet? Thanks all, Annie.
MODS SO FAR..... Black Renthal bars Black / blue Progrips Black levers with blue adjusters Black bar ends Black mirrors with built in LED indicators (old indicators removed) Aluminium tribal design reservoir cover Mini LED rear indicators Fender extender Crash bungs WAITING TO GO ON..... Shorter side stand (bike is lowered) Exhaust Seat cowl (waiting for delivery) Blue reflective wheel tapes. TO FOLLOW...... Rad cover Hugger Belly pan Undertray Tail tidy Blue engine bolts Blue oil cap Black fuel cap / blue bolts Wheels sprayed black Frame powder coated (when I've won the lottery!!) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'll presume you exhaust hasn't been cut at this stage? the pipe (where cut) is 51mm and the link pipe should carry this on to the can, normally the can is 52mm, however I have cut four evenly spaced 3/4 inch slots in a 51mm can and fitted it over, with a suitable clamp it does work but you'll need a little exhaust paste to stop any leaks, but really it should be slightly larger (52-53mm)
Cheers Mark.

Or you could buy a link pipe that will slip over the two to fit them together. You can use high temp (or oven) silicone sealant to seal it all up. One of the big exhaust companies sell them but I can't think which. They're generally sold to refit standard cans once the pipe has been cut.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies and apologies for the delay in responding. It seems there was quite a simple solution out there that I didn't know about - exhaust expanders. I'd never heard of them before but you can get them off fleabay in either a set of 3 for around the £20 mark or in singles for about a tenner. I bought a single one (medium size = 40mm to 60mm range) and its worked a treat! Link pipe goes straight in now

Excellent news.
You've helped me actually as I've got a slightly different problem with one. I'm off to find said expanders. Edit: Wow! I didn't expect that. They're basically a big pipe flaring tool. Not so sure that will help me after all. Last edited by monkey; 03-08-12 at 11:43 PM. |

Hi there Mark, yup, cant wait to get the exhaust fitted (got to be patient until next weekend) then I can get out and enjoy the sound! Just as well I've got a full face helmet or I'd have a grin full of flies!! Wanted to do a few bits on it this morning but guess what - torrential rain here
![]() I didn't get the can I was looking at in the end. I'm going to save that money and put it towards the hugger and belly pan I want. I'll stick with the blue flame evo coloured titanium jobby that I bought previously. Its a little scratched but it still looks good, still had the same problem with it though and needed to expand the pipe to make it fit, which as I said, has been done now so all hunky dorey Hi Monkey, yes its a simple tool that you just put inside the pipe and turn. It then expands inside the pipe widening it or straightening out dents etc. What is the problem that you've got? (not that I'd know what to do!!) Annie x |
