Hiya, new on here, had my SV about 7 months now, has 32K on the clock, somewhat of a varied service history, but got a full service including valve clearances last month soshould in theory be running sweet, but....
Every now and then, it will just cut out, never when im moving, but when im sat at lights, or a junction etc.... I didnt mention it when i got it serviced, because i thought £323 was a big enough bill if im honest! Although that does include a rear michelin pilot too... Anyway, anyone had similar issues, and what are peoples ideas of the culprit? Thanks! |

I'm sure you've checked it but just incase you haven't, have you checked the idle speed isn't too low?

Haha, made a proper noob mistake and missed the post someone put a few days ago, same topic as mine and idle speed was suggested, but it ticks over nicely at approx. 1300 r/min.
I was thinking about it earlier, and when im slowing down, as in pulled the clutch in coming to a stop, if i blip the throttle, you can hear what sounds like one of the cylinders not firing, but it is only every now and then, there is no consistency to it happening, which is good in a way i suppose. I cant think of any reason for it doing it though, it had new plugs on the service, and they are sured up nice and tight so i cant think what it could be, if it is related at all....? ![]() |

Sticking choke plungers are a prime candidate. They only have to be cracked open a touch to cause the mixture to go way rich at idle, and if they are only just sticky it can be apparently random.

If the idle speed is a little low then it will tick over okay on its own, but can stall when you pull up at a junction.

Check out the choke plungers for sure as they do get sticky. Mine have played up and a new OEM choke cable was required, plus some new plugs as one them was well fouled.
However, I had a similar problem as you over a year ago and I sprayed some carb cleaner into the carbs and never had the problem again, even with my sticky choke plungers which got fixed at a later date. |

Hi, not wishing to hijack this thread
![]() On some bikes with Mikuni CV carbs there is a technique called 'shotgun' for clearing out blocked jets using carb cleaner and compressed air, which doesn't appear in any of the manuals. Is there such a fix for the SV650 ? Thanks MC |

Hi maxcaddy, i had a little look at my bike today, and i think it is the choke plungers causing the issue, as the choke cable itself doesnt look to be engaging/dis-engaging fully all the time, which would also explain the randomness of it. I have ordered a new choke cable which i intend on fitting this weekend seeing as im doing a few bits to it this weekend, (new seals in the calipers and SS brake lines) so ill post again letting you know if this sorts the issue.
As for 'shotgunning' the carbs, it doesnt sound like a brilliant idea IMO, but i could be wrong. If you choose to follow it as a potential remedy, then thats your choice, but if you end up having more of a real life shotgun effect on them, then i think you are gonna be somewhat worse off ![]() |

It's doubtful you'll need the cable.
The problem will be the choke plungers in the carbs themselves, they'll be all gummed up and won't move smoothly.
