Bike wouldnt start thought it was battery I put a new one on. Same problem again 2 weeks later struggled to turn over then dead a dodo, electrics work but the bike wont start. The boyfriend took off the solenoid it clicks when he touches it and the fuse is working, put the bike back together and it started up fine BUT we havent done anything to fix the problem as we dont know what the problem is

have you checked Regulator/Rectifier ? I would start there if not , making sure the battery is getting a charge , |

Hi thanks for answering i have done that yes everything is fine where the reg/rec are concerned. When the bike is turned on the solenoid doesnt make any noise it doesnt even click but when the solenoid is taken off the bike and tested it does click.
I have looked through some of the threads that other members have posted up and im going to have a look at the spring in the starter if that is ok will have a look at the clutch switch. |

Put a voltmeter on the relevant terminals on the four pin plug at the solenoid, (backprobe it - if you disconnect it nothing will work at all), if you have suitable voltage there the problem is the solenoid, if not it's wiring and switches.

Before you do that I had these symptoms on my 2001 a couple of years ago. It turned out the bushes were sticking in the starter motor and not touching the central spindle. A half hour strip down and clean up did the business. I'd try that before getting stuck into the guts of the wiring loom.

I had a similar problem. The solenoid was faulty as it was absorbing 8A instead of 3A. To check this cheaply you need an amphere meter, off an old car dash maybe, in line with a supply to see the amount of current it needs to switch on. I replaced the faulty solenoid and bike now has been staring for 2 years since I did this. Got the same battery on the bike which used to need constant charging on the bench before this.

If the relay (solenoid) does not click, don't bother looking at the starter.
