Default Shorter Dog-Bones Question - Pointy

My mate has just got his first bike its an SV650s K7.
Its got a ZXR-6 Rear shock, he would like to know if he were to buy the 40mm dogbones to lower the ride height would they be compatible with the ZXR shock ? I believe the ZXR is slightly bigger than the stock shock.
Also would anything need to be done at the front end to compensate for the shorter bones ?
He already has a lowered seat.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Don't know the answer I'm afraid, but it's worth mentioning that if he wants to lower the bike he needs longer dog-bones, not shorter.

& it's a 1 in 2 ratio
so if the dog bones are 1" longer
it'll lower the back end 2"

Default Shorter Dog-Bones Question - Pointy

Are we talking about Squiz's new bike? If so he has a zx10r 06-07 rear shock, not a zx6. I should know, I fitted it
It's 8mm longer than standard IIRC and the front has been dropped through the yolks by 5mm.
Oh, and its a late registered K6 on an 07 plate. Not relevant here I know but might be in the future as K7 was when Suzuki introduced the twin spark. Anyway...If we're not talking about toms bike then disregard the above

In theory I don't see why longer dog bones wouldn't fit. The current set up uses the stock SV linkage so any aftermarket dog bones made for the SV should fit as a replacement.
The question really is "is it a good idea to fit longer dog bones to lower the rear".
The main point most people make about using dog bones to raise/lower the bike is that it can adversely effect the handling and the way the shock performs. A quick search on here should throw up some good reading. I asked a similar question on here once when i was considering fitting an incorrectly sourced gsxr shock and got some good responses. I ended up selling the gixer shock and getting the zx10r one instead.

Tom seems about the same height as me. I couldn't flat foot the bike but was comfortable one legging it or just using the balls of my feet to steady it when stationary. Is this an option?

Default Shorter Dog-Bones Question - Pointy

Dug out the old thread where I was asking about this very thing (although I was looking to raise the rear, not lower it. I believe lowering the rear is more detrimental to handling).
It touches on why some feel its not a good idea to use different length dog bones but searching will give you a lot more of what you need to know.

For the record I haven't tried it so can't speak from experience, only passing on advice I got from the org. Some people might tell you they've done it and its been fine for them.

Had longer bones in mine when i bought it. didnt realise it was lowered although the signs were there:

1. Forks stuck up further out of the yoke to compensate for the drop at the rear (believe standard is the fork is flush with yoke??) think mine were up by maybe as much as 10mm.
2. the thing was damn near vertical when on the side stand. Looked odd and felt awkward putting stand down.
3. felt wildly different to my last pointy. Handling through corners was awful for me compared to my old one.

If thinking of lowering it, ask if they can get on without it.

FYI, if lowering it consider getting a 2nd hand side stand and lopping a bit off so it is the right length for the new height....mine fell over whilst warming it up and cost me a mirror and indicator and put a dent in the standard can. Was fuming!
