Default Pointy + R&G Taily Tidy - Tyre Clearence

05 pointy (naked)

Happy Friday

I had to replace my number plate bracket and put an R & G tail tidy on. With a regular sized number plate, the number plate is slightly above the tyre (rather than "beyond it") and at an angle that looks like it could scrape the tyre with a lot of weight on the back (ie pillion and luggage). I think this is due to the SV's panel of LED lights. Looking at other's bikes ("Show us yer pointy"), mine does look similar to some of those.

See pic (not my bike, but illustrates the point)

I guess I am just looking for someone to say that they have the same set up and its fine, and no amount of weight on the back will cause an issue!

Thanks

Used to have something that resembled that photo on my old pointy and never had an issue

I have some something similar to that on my pointy, maybe a bit closer to the tyre. I've found with the dorris on the back it sometimes rubs on the tyre, I've never actually felt it while riding but it's worn a nice little radius on the bottom of my number plate

I've had 7x5 number plates on last couple if bikes including my pointy SV with tail tidy. You could stick one on your bike?

Never had any attention from boys in blue, even when they've been behind me for prolonged periods of time. My MOT tester is fine about it too.

you could get a tape measure and measure the distances:

1) Center from swinging arm pivot point in the frame to the furthest extent of tyre along the line (axis) of the swinging arm.
2) Center of the swinging arm pivot in the frame to the bottom of the numberplate.

if 2 is bigger than 1 then your OK.

Damn, using Shawthing's measurment 1 is 32 inches. 2 is 30 inches. Maybe I should have got a diffrent tail tidy. Just assumed the R&G one for the SV would be a decent one. Not keen on a small numberplate as a solution.

I had an evotech tail tidy. It seemed to angle the number plate away from the wheel a bit more than the R&G one in your pic.

I have just replaced the R&G tail tidy that was on mine. The plate outside was distorting the plastics and the "captive" nuts in the mounting plates weren't! I got one on ebay from the US which fits better, has LED number plate light, a cover plate to stop rain and crud getting in and was less than half the price of the R&G. Fits well and gives more clearance due to the angle of the plate. Also has a "lifetime warranty" which R&G would definitely not give as the one that I took off was knackered.
