Bikeradar has a dedicated MTB section so you could have a browse around there and see if you find anything useful

You're already doing the best thing to find out about mountain biking. Going and riding. Finding the best rails in most places is about knowing the forests and local knowledge. I remember a little while back I think it was Nirvana cycles on the south down used to have people meet up at the shop on saturdays or sundays. Good place to start to gain some local knowledge.
IF you have more time for it and have transport, some of the places in wales are excellent for not needing any navigating (Like Cwm Carn). Also Bristol has some great trails if you know the local, and go either in Summer (dry sometimes) or deep winter (Frozen solid). |

Pinkbike.com is another good resource. Plenty of reviews and a place to upload your riding pics. The forum is filled with 13 year olds and idiots though.

I've been to a place called the 'look out' (I think, that's what it was called!) in Bracknell, twas really, really good from what I remember of it too. have no idea if it's still there now etc. best thing about it when I went and used it was it was free as well!

Lookout is Swinley Forest. It was awesome before they built the proper marked routes. It's still really good but REALLY busy on weekends unless you get there when it's still dark and even then there are quite a few people.
There isn't anything mega technical or any fully committed obstacles so easy for a beginner. Think I'll be going Sunday morning with a mate but only for a quick blast before the rest of England show up
