Changed brake seals a few months ago but they're in need of an overhaul this weekend as theres absolutely no feel or movement in the brake lever at all - just like an on/of switch at the moment.
Anyhows, I remember Dr Squid recommending red rubber grease a while ago and was wondering exactly where its put (stupid question I know). Have trawled the archives but couldn't find anything. Also, is it possible to refit the seals if they need to be taken out to clean any crudfrom the rim underneath ? Thanks everyone. |

Hi,
Red ruber grease can be bought from some bike shops (phone ahead) and some car parts shops (Halfords didn't have it last time I checked). Seals can be used as long as they are in god condition (no cracks, perising, and they spring back to shape if squished) Also undo the brake lever from the master cylinder at the top (should be a lock nut underneath and a flat head screw at the top), and clean the lever and the whole area around it then regrease or use some heavy oil to lubricate the pivot and area again, as if the lever pivot and surrounding area are full of dirt and grit, this can give thesymptoms you are describing.

Cheers jambo.
Do you put the grease around the seal and the groove or does some go on the actual piston also ? |

coat the seals in it , put a little on the pistons too, it helps it all slide together nicely again.

Falc you better hope Big Ape does not spot your erroneous suggestion. He has taken umbridge with people posting inaccurate advice in the past. One that suggests a totally inapropriate grease for oil seals on brakes could just see him vent his exasperation!
