Virus infected mail, your attitude please

Background

I run both antivirus and spam filters on my mail servers which provide a service to a small number of customers. where infected mail or spam is detected it is deleted.

When I do detect virus infected mail I delete it and out of courtesy inform both the sender and recipient of the nature of the virus, when etc.

Now a guy has just phoned me in a real strop. He is trying to tender for some work and sent his tender in word format including a macro virus 3 times and I have deleted it. How dare I interfere with his mail.

I phoned my customer to ask if they want to opt out from the virus & spam policy and they declined. They like the idea of belt and braces that I virus check their mail and did not like the amount of penis enlargement mail they got prior to me hosting their mail.

I have phoned this guy back, again advising him that the problem is his. And again got abuse, the recipient is laughing saying that there is no way they would wish to deal with a company that sends out infected mail.

If you were this guy. Would you get a strop, or simply say "Thank you for advising me about this. I will update my virus protection"

Set up a rule that automatically forwards all infected mail to this guy.

Was it a genuine email or just a mailshot advertising his services?

I'd tell him to bugger off. I wouldn't want to deal with someone who sends potential viruses via email.

I still find it amusing when we get other departments saying they cant open a CV that has been e-mailed to them... Turns out the applicant has sent it in as some really random file format. Surely if your applying for the job your not doing yourself any good sending in non standard formats!

Would you consider Open Document Format (ISO/IEC 26300) to be a non-standard format?

In an large company you can except them to be using an off suite. Be it Microsoft Office (majority) or something else like Lotus *sudders* or Open Office.

A .txt is going to be your best bet but you can hardly make a nice looking CV using plain text :P but whats wrong with using rich text or .doc?

Or PDF, I've seen alot of CV's from agencies that have been converted to PDF. Saves any mucking about then IMHO.

I think where companies require a certain format they should specify it. Unfortunately there are businesses who assume that you should transmit documents in MS formats. I would much rather any document was a well defined XML doc if it is for reuse. Or if simply for reading/bining in a PDF format.
