Cus I'm a cheap skate I'm can't be arsed to get that expensive USB wireless adapter for my 360. So I'm looking at picking up a wireless bridge/access point, anyone else done this? I know the theory and it should be easy, but wanted to check to see if it really is.
No I ain't running 20 metres of cat 5 through my rented house. |

Yup, and helped set it up for countless other people.
You can even get a cheepo USB-eth convertor, stick that in the back of the 360, plug an eth cable in, and run to a normal AP. If you're a geek like me, you've got CAT5/5e/6 kicking around in enough quantity to hang the population of France, with connectors & crimp tool. |

I've got 20 metres of the stuff, but I'd rather avoid hacking the house up. Plus the 360 might be moving if I can get a cheap HD 19 inch TV.

The point is that you can pickup a cheap wireless AP that only takes ETH, then a cheap USB-ETH adaptor, and you already have the bits to join them up ![]() |

Why do I need a USB-ETH adapter? The 360 has a ETH port, surely it just plug in to the AP ether and then in to the 360 ether. Or have I missed something in the translation.

You don't need one, but in practice, wireless is easier on the 360 using USB.
It will work on both, and especially later revisions haven't had any issues using a bridge from wired - wireless networking. Don't ask me the logic behind it, it's MS. Also, for some reason, I have a fixation with USB today. First day back in the office since last friday... |

I've set up 3 360's in 3 different houses with 3 different methods.
1: Big Cat5e cable from ethernet on PC to ethernet on back of 360....works fine and no slow-mo on the games unless you're downloading/uploading stuff then it really takes a kicking and you'll be getting spanked on everything from lag. 2: Wireless BT home hub plugged into nearest phone socket ( just happens to be next to TV aerial so behind TV) plug ethernet into hub and into 360. Better than PC link as you don't have to switch PC on to run. 3: Wireless BT hub, Wireless 360 connector. You'll struggle to get it to work if you're more than 5 or 6 metres away from each other and especially through walls. Once setup though has all the benefits of wired router but no stupid wires to trip over. you could use a wireless AP like this and just ethernet into the 360 i suppose but unless you can pick up a cheap one it'll be just as cheap buying USB wireless 360 adapter. EDIT: Forgot to mention....if you need / want a new contract then BT are giving away the adapters with a special deal from XBOX on THIS PAGE. That's where i got mine from, took 2 weeks to come after i switched to BT Last edited by Stormspiel; 10-05-07 at 02:36 PM. |

Well I've seen wireless AP for about a fiver, and 360 wireless adapters not go for less then 30quid, so that's why I was looking at the AP route.

I tried to use a wireless AP with the 360 but gave up, the setup was easy, etc. but the latency introduced by the wireless made the response pretty poor in some games - Fafa being one of them.
I've now bought a kit from Amazon where you route network traffic through the power cables - saved running an ethernet cable down the wall and works perfectly. |
