Default Exhaust Legality

Nottinghamshire is quite keen on pulling up 'nuisance' cars and has recently achieved a county wide injuction on groups of 3 or more cars, this is apparently now extending to bikes.

My exhaust is supposed to be legal (with the baffles in obviously) and has the British Standard stamp clearly displayed etc.

If I have the main baffle in and the small baffle out its loud, not offensively, but still likely to catch attention. How can the police then prove that the exhaust is legal or illegal, as it has the BS stamp and as far as they can tell it has the baffles in.....would I likely get bummed or would I be ok?. If it has a BS stamp is it road legal as far as they are concerned baffles in or not?

I dont fancy getting a £30 fine or worse everytime I head out to the local bike playspot or pub meet.

I beleive you have the same exhaust as me, blueflame right.

unless the police man that pulls you over knows about exhausts or happens to have a sound meter in his boot then they will not be able to tell as it has the all the right stamps on the back of it.

I have cut mine down 7 inches so it is even louder and I have not got any baffels in and I have not had a problem so far ---- runs to touch wood ---- It just sounds really loud as you have only just cut the OEM one off, give it a few months and you'll have the top baffel out

You want to have a listen to petevtwin650 exhaust, that will make your ears bleed it you get to close, I could hear Petes over mine and he was 2 bikes in front of me!!

Morning all.
As there is a lot of confusion over exhausts, due to so many people riveting on BS badges & so on, the MOT test has gone back to the old method of 'testers lugholes'. I suspect that the Police work on the same principal. So providing that your bike doesn't out decibel Concorde, & you don't rev its bits off in a built up area, you should be ok.
A silencer will fail an MOT if it's marked 'not for road use' irrespective of how loud it actually is. Again, the Plod will work on the same principal, so get sanding & polishing boys & girls.

Cheers.

Once again we get back to common sense, don't take the p*ss and you'll normally be fine, however if you "rub him up the wrong way" expect at least a rectification notice and a delay at the side of the road, they only have to think it's noisy to issue one, then it's up to you to prove it's not.

Cheers Mark.

I have heard yours on one of the midland rideouts to be fair with all baffles out it sets off car alarms and isnt far off yours.

I geuss on random checks I will be fine as it has all the legal stamps.......if I get pulled over because they are of the opinion it is too loud then I will be £30 down regardless.

I can live with that.

That's my feeling too. Just hope I don't have one of those days when you get stopped 5 times.

This is true, fortunately I can put the baffles back in if I carry them under my seat cowl.

Cheers.
I'll backup the lugholes & not taking the mick sentiments.

I was recently followed by a Policeman on a Pan (who was just about to pull me over). He followed me for a good half mile or so, through twisties, where I was up & down the gearbox, revving on downshifts etc.

My exhaust is a Scorpion with baffle removed.

He looked at it, but didn't do me for it.

Apparently, it's not just the volume, it's the quality of the sound that matters too. If I'd of been on an IL4, screaming around 13,000 rpm, I'd of probably paid another £30 on top of the £90 I did pay. V-twin's sound better, IMO.
