Default Car sat nav on a bike.

Bought a sat nav for my car yesterday. Today, despite it piddling of rain I had to try it out on my bike, so ventured out!! I used the standard screen suction mount thingy and just sucked/mounted it on the rev-counter glass

Here we go; youtube messed with the quality, but if you persevere you will see (and hear) it in action!!

The only thing I would be worried about is getting the thing wet.

How many times have our clocks got wet?? I was out and about for a good hour, from torrential to spitting to no rain ... it got nothing more than the odd spot on it As long as you are 'on the move' you are ok ... the only time it is potentially problematic is when you stop and the water comes down ...

I am sure it could be placed/covered in a clear plastic bag with little effort

Why would it fall off any more than in a car?? In a car it is actually hung from the window ... on the clocks it is slightly taking the weight ... but for sure, if I was to install it for more use, I'd put a safety line on it just in case it came unstuck!

I bought a Nuvi and stuck it in my tank bag map pocket, but I had to keep climbing over it to see where it was going, and not looking where I was going. Good for city work, but not needed for the back roads where I actually like to get lost! Got Europe on it though.

Thought about that, but foresaw the problem, so that is why I stuck it on the rev counter ... its no different to looking at the speedo or rev counter to see where to go

Give it a go

As I said, if I was to do it again I'd afix a tether as a safety measure, but at the end of the day it didn't move after bout an hours riding, so I reckon teh suction cup/mount thingy is good to go!!!!

if your worried about it getting wet then put a clear bag over it!!!!

as for falling off, what about putting a key ring on it somewhere and tieing it to the bike

I was running off the internal batteries ... but it wouldn't be too hard to wire it to the bikes power ... I already have a switched 12v run to the front for my heated grips

The batteries last about 4-5hrs ... more than enough to not need it powered on the bike to get where you are going (unless you are touring or summin and need it for day after day without the opportunity to charge).
