Default Debate at work..

Wondering on your thoughts about this..

We were talking motorsport as we usually do, and it came on to a certain Mr Hamilton, who lives in Switzerland.

One person was staunchly of the opinion that as he is no longer living in britain and not paying taxes in britain, that he should not be allowed to compete as British. No other reason, just that he didn't pay tax here.

My arguments went unheeded... If you were earning mega millions and it was within reach and practical to do so, I'm fairly sure a good few of us here would move elsewhere and pay less tax. After all, you earn your money and don't want to give half of it away..
The person arguing this also has said numerous times that he couldn't go from self employed to on the books- he wouldn't want to pay all that tax..

Aside from that, it'd be a quick way of disowning a good portion of British people competing at the highest level.

What thinks you, org?

Think your mates wrong, Lewis is one of the highlights of this year, he's as british as me and will always be, wherever he lives

If they were born here, that's good enough imo.

Same goes for JT, if I recall. Lives on the IoM and works for himself under some company name or other.

I have always found it hard to convince people that I am in fact Scottish.
I have a british forces accent which is basically a non regional english accent. Because of this people say I am English. When I then explain that I was born in Dundee and that my parents are both from Scotland they pause for a while...'but you have an english accent that means your english!!!'
Just goes to prove that some people are stupid.

I think Alonso is or was the only F1 driver who actually lived in the UK. IoM is a favourite, Chris Walker, JT, Nigel Mansell and even Jeremy Clarkson is registered there too.

If I was earning squillions, I too would move to a tax haven. The UK is not the place to be if you earn a big wage. Most of the rich people residing in the UK are registered elsewhere, so they too are not paying taxes. I reckon if a pole of Premiership football players was done on where there money is, the majority would show somewhere other than Britain.

The Uk is not the place to be if you earn any wage. If you're interested in claiming benefits on the other hand...
