i know the amount of stuff on your computer affects the speeds so i would assume youve got a ****load of programs and genral gunk on the tower and not much on the laptop

The amount of data on your PC won't affect it's download or upload speed though.
I'd try a different port on the router for the LAN cable or a new LAN cable or NIC. |

could be all sorts of things - does the router do any caching, the performance of the test site, your contention ratio at the time of the test etc
do the test multiple times and find an average - they will probably then be less difference between the 2 machines. |

Your tower PC is too busy sending out spam and your bank account details.

Its probably true... I'd check for any rouge programs on you tower that's also using your bandwidth. Spybot or Ad-aware are good spyware cleaners, and spybot in the advanced section have a program startup cleaner with a pop out information bar that tells you what most programs do.

Speedtest programs rely on you not downloading anything else at the same time as running your test. If you had any browsers / email client / MSN / etc open, these could 'steal' bandwidth from the speedtest client and so give a skewed result. If you know this and only had the speedtest active, then of course it is possible that something else is downloading stuff onto your computer and looking at spyware / viruses may be a good point to start.
You don't use Lymewire or similar on this machine do you? |
