Default Turning over but not firing

My 2001 SVS has been letting me down on and off for the last few weeks, but its now everytime I use it.

The bike starts okay first thing, but after a ride, once its turned off, it then wont restart.
Its the same whether i've just popped to shops, or done 100 miles.
It turns over but wont fire.
At first I thought battery, but wont fire even with jump leads.
I've tried full choke with no throttle (how it 'prefers' to be started) to no choke with full throttle and everything in between.
It will (usuallly) fire after about 10 minutes, then runs fine until the next time its turned off.
However its getting worse (sometimes wont start if stood an hour) and its now pure luck if it fires or not.
Its taken all fun out of riding it, as i'm not sure if this time is the time it'll never start again.

Any ideas?

thanks

Daz

god knows.

i'm fairly useless with a spanner (mostly nervous about making something worse) so guess i'll just have to line the pocket of local bike mechanic!

Is the inside of the exhaust particularly sooty?

No more than it's always been I dont think (but there is soot for sure)

i'm sure checking the spark plugs cant be too hard, so i'll check for fouling, but then wouldnt know what to do anyway!

Courses start at Hull College soon on bike maintenance, so got to sign up for that, must be money well spent!
