If it was me, I would go for the 750 - Quiff Wichard has a nice GSXR 750 for sale at the moment - might be worth PMing him.

Default Re: Which Gixxer??

I went from a SV to a GSXR K5 750.

Took me some time to get used to the throttle and brakes. I.e. the throttle is very sensitive and the bike spins up quickly on the throttle. The brakes are awesome compared to the SV's. They stop you really really well, but have lots of feel through the lever so you can tell whats going on. The chassis is much much more responsive than the SV, when I first got it I would find myself turning into corners and then having to pick the bike back up and then turn in again as I was used to the slower steering of my SV.

Its easy to ride, much easier than the SV. It has plenty of go if you stir the gearbox or you can leave it 5th / 6th gear all day and it'll eat the miles up. It has plenty of mid range. It'll pull 6th gear from 4000rpm all the way to the rev limiter. The real fun begins at 7000rpm with a step in power at 10000rpm ish after which you'll be hitting the rev limiter before you know it.

The throttle response is what took me the most time to get used to. You cant just pin the throttle coming out of corners like I was doing on the SV. You have to wind it on progressively rather than just snapping it open.

Suspension is sublime, its like riding a magic carpet, deals with bumps and potholes much better than the SV does.

It has got engine braking, just not as much as the SV, if you shut the throttle at high RPM it definately has plenty there. However I never really used it on the SV I had as I learnt to ride on a two stroke so never got into the habbit of using engine braking anyway. However you wont miss the engine braking as the front brakes more than make up for the lack of it.

Look for a standard bike thats not had a bucket load of tat aftermarket parts chucked at it. the 14'500 service should also have included a valve clearance check so if it has that sort of milleage on it make sure its been done.

K4 / K5 are the same, just IIRC minor differences in the paint schemes.

Well it has the typical Suzuki paint finish i.e the paints thin so it suffers stone chips easily. On mine the exhaust header bolts have gone rusty. Apart from having replacement brake pads fitted and a new clutch cable its never really needed anything doing to it bar routine servicing and tyres. I had to get a new battery a while ago as I left my bike over winter and the alarm drained the battery and it wouldnt take a charge after that.

If your heavy with the throttle it eats rear tyres. Particularly the Bridgestone 014's that model comes with as standard.

If you can afford it I would go with the 750 the ability to ride it in a lazier style is really beneficial on long trips IMHO. It tours well to will take luggage no trouble. Not very good for pillion comfort though so my other half tells me.

HTH

i had the same dilemma a few months back and got the 750 - my view was if i got the 600 i would want a 750 after a short time whilst the 750 is enough bike to last a long time. i have a k7 750 and can not fault it at all, the k4/5 are the same as are the k6/7 - the 6 and 7's look better imo but the k4/k5 are meant to be faster

go to the http://www.gixerjunkies.net/forum/index.php

and have a good read lots of info on there

I have a K6 600, and while I loved my SV, you really notice a big difference in terms of brakes and suspension when making the switch.

Most people seem to prefer the 750, though personally having ridden both K6s a fair bit I prefer the revviness of the 600, and it does feel slightly more flickable, despite the relatively small weight difference.

In your situation I'd probably go for a K4/K5 750 rather than the 600 - IMHO it looks better, was widely rated as the best sports bike of the year, and I haven't heard anything bad about them as a choice of bike (except maybe finish, but TBH that's the case with most bikes these days it seems)

J2UK!!!! Your prayers (and mine) may have been answered!!!

The other half has just bought a GSXR1000 and he still has his K5 750. Why not come round for a ride on it and see if you like it, we are only 10 minutes away in Bournemouth. I may be able to pursuade him to sell it now instead of holding on to the 2 bikes. Its not like he can ride both .....

Mwahahahaha - my evil plan is starting to take shape.

I went from a naked pointy to a K5 600 Gixer just over a year ago, but am on the verge of swapping back. That's mainly because I've got a couple of minor sports injuries which make riding the Gixer more than 50 miles uncomfortable (and ultimately painful). However, I'd still be considering that move even if that weren't the case .....

The Gixer is, without doubt, faster and better handling as well as having better brakes than the SV (as Fizzwheel has already mentioned). However, I've never really found it anywhere near as much fun. I really miss red-lining the SV everywhere, the sound (and engine braking) of the v-twin, and it's general chuckability. For that reason, I'd tend to to disagree with Fizzwheel that the Gixer is easier to ride.

Most reviews of the SV will at some point mention that it appeals to both learners and experienced riders and I do believe that's true. For the latter, that will probably mean upgrading suspension and brakes to some extent, but for what you pay it's top value.

The other factor (and the one that makes me think I'm getting old !!!) is the limited number of chances I get to use it to it's potential. The roads are nearly always busy, badly surfaced and festooned (great word) with speed cameras. 80% of the time I could get from A-B just as fast on the SV, just not as stylishly .....

Having said all that, I've not had a single response to my ad on MCN, and I'm not too disappointed !!! If only I could afford both ....

For me it would have to be the 750. Partly because it's one bike I always should have had but didn't right from the early slab sided ones and also because if I'd decided it I was going to have a GSXR I just know if I went for the 600 I'd always know there was something better out there and I'd short changed myself. Apart from more grunt and power (mainly the grunt for me) there the same bike so why have one with less power? If you want less power you can always move your right wrist a bit less.

If you've decided the GSXR is the right bike for you and you can afford either it must be a no-brainer surely.

600. 750 is for people too lazy to learn how to ride a 600 properly.
