Hey!
Is it worth getting an alarm on my SV? Does anyone else have one? I think I would get a Cat1 if I was going to, but which one??

Yeah I have a Datatool, ummm... System 3 or something like that. It was dealer fitted when the bike was new. It does give a bit of extra peace of mind, although it can be a pain when working on the bike because you can't turn it off entirely - it beeps every minute to say "hey i'm turned off here". It doesn't appear to drain the battery much either. Actually had no problems with it at all, apart from the LED that corroded and broke off, which I simply replaced (with a cool blue one
![]() It's not a substitute for a strong chain and ground anchor. Any thief knows that alarms can be defeated just by setting them off a few times, after that everyone ignores them.

Well I've got an Almax Chain and ground anchor, but its for like when you go to the local supermarket and put a little disc lock on and just to stop kids running up going "nice bike, lets touch it!" after ive just cleaned and polished it or something,
![]() Haven't decided yet though.

Honestly, no I dont think it is. Its not unknown for bikes to get loaded into vans with the alarm going off and nobody batting an eye lid. If they want your bike they will take it and in my experience an alarm wont stop somebody sitting on it whilst you are in the supermaket / shop either. How many times have you heard an alarm going off and just ignored it.
It does add an extra level of deterant, but it wont stop a hardened theif from having your bike away. I've got one on my GSXR, mainly because it did bring my insurance premium down. I will never ever buy another sodding datatool alarm, they are nothing but a complete pain in the butt. Especially the fact when you put it into service mode it bleeps every 15 seconds to tell anybody who knows what they listening for that your bike isnt alarmed. I have a Meta 357T and I find it much less instrusive / less of a pain in the bum, so thats what I'd go for if I were you.

Turn the ignition on, then hold down the arm button on the keyfob for something like 10 seconds until it beeps at you. Then let go the button and turn the ignition off. It shoudl emit a quiet yet annoying beep at you every 15 seconds to remind you that its in service mode.

(Picks up sledgehammer)
Thanks. cBay, I've owned a bike with an alarm from only September, but have already decided to never get one with an alarm again. Maybe if its a couple of tenners, but not otherwise. Im just gonna carry a disc lock under the seat everywhere, and chain it up when its gonna stand for longer than a few hours |

They can shove a screaming bike into a truck, but if it's in Fort Knox, it will take a while longer

i have a friend with a z750 with an alarm on from before he got it but just from the stories he's told me i can honestly say I don't want an alarm anytime soon! The amount of times it has drained his battery. He says if he leaves even for a week itll be dead when he gets back to it!

I've got a datatool system 3 red. It was fitted at the shop when I bought my bike new. I've since modded it a bit so the flashing LED is inside one of the rear indicators. Obviously this never flashes when riding.
I've had no problems with it at all, and if i'm ever working on it I put it in 'ferry mode', it's still immobilised but the alarm isn't on. I did get it for free though... |
