Default Pointy, knocking noise?

This is a strange one - to me anyways. The bike has recently started to develop a bit of a knocking noise but only when it is cornering.

It doesn't knock when its sitting upright or when i'm sitting at lights, only on corners. I think I could do with some more oil in any case 'cos my oil pipe leaks a wee bit and i've not checked to see how little oil there is left in it.

Does this sound like a simple lack of oil or something non-engine related?

Hard to say but dont be lazy with the oil. That is the 1 guarenteed thing to f*** your engine over.

Checking the oil level is a lot easier that checking for oil leaks.

could be anything from a loose bearing to a bolt not tightened properly. don't put off checking oil or you WILL regret it.

it says your in Dundee so take it somewhere like Cupar motorcycles and get it checked out.

I got my wife to bring over some oil so I could put some so it'll be enough till I get back home. Its hard to see the oil level in the car park where I am so will check when home. Hopefully my copper washers will turn up today and I can do all the work this evening.

I might end up putting it into Cupar Motorcycles but dread the cost at a time when money is tight.

if its knocking due to lack of oil, the damage will already have been done.

Is the knocking bike speed related, or engine speed related.
ie: if you go round a corner in a low gear with lots of revs on is the knocking quicker than when you go round at the same speed in a higher gear with low revs?

I think it may be bike speed rather than engine speed. When I filled it with some oil I let it run for a few minutes and tried it at idle and about 4k revs with no audible knock.

I'll have to pay attention when I'm going home 'cos I only noticed the noise when I was about a mile away from work. I live about 6 miles away from my work so will have a chance to test it then.

If it's speed related and only on corners then check the tyres to see if there is anything in the tread (like a screw or stone stuck fast), although when that happens you normally only get the sound when cornering in a particular direction... Other than that check for loose bodywork hitting the wheels, knackered bearings (play in the wheels when you pull the top side to side) or even a very loose chain.

I've had a knackered crank only knock when the bike was underload and warm, when idling and cool no knock.
