Default Changing sprocket sizes?

I need a full answer and not I like, I think, I heard.

I need new chain as it has a tight spot and its done a few good miles now. So no point in doing one without the other.

I want a quicker acceleration so is it better to two up on the rear or one down on the front? And then there is chains. Is it standard 525 on the SV650S? Whats a 520 for?

So do I stay with a 525 chain and go up two on the rear or, one down on the back? The chain will be a DID X-RING but want to make sure I get it right.

I've tried to get an answer from the search on here but cant get the right answer I need.

You are better losing a tooth on the front sprocket to increase the acceleration

I like the fact that I think I heard losing a tooth in the front will give 3+ the effect of one in the rear but will increase chain and sprocket wear. I also think i heard that someone liked this change and felt their chain would be Ok with regular oiling.

i did change the pinion (is it that the correct name?) with one with 1 tooth less: i've a pointy s than i should have a 15-44 as default (now 14-44), i prefer the bike now, definetely more nervous but more ready to accelerate...
if you ride a lot on highways or care particularly for the petrol budget then is not the right choice...but for everything else i would do it again immediately!

the cheap way is to reduce the front sprocket, but not the best, the front sprocket is considerably smaller than the rear and consequently works that much harder, you also increase the tightness of the bend of the chain around the smaller size, this increases chain wear and shortens it's life, approx 3 teeth on the rear sprocket will have much the same effect, but obviously will need a longer chain, but should give better longevity.

Cheers Mark.

520 is lighter and has less surface area so less friction, I run a 520 on my trackbike without any issues. I also run a Heavy duty chain which has no O / X rings so the drive is more direct without the squishyness the O / X rings give. Great for the track with no road crap flying flying around not so good on the road.

I run one tooth less on the front (= 3 on rear) it means you dont have a great bit sprocket on the rear I have noticed no significant wear on the sprocket, chain, gearbox output shaft using this method even after around 25 days on track (also ran a ZXR400 with this setup and no detrimental effects either).

One tooth less on the front give you alot more punt out of the corners but the straights suffer with a lower top end.

My road SV also runs a 520 chain but with O ring chain and 1 tooth off front but it hasnt been on long enough to provide a full evaluation

Check out this site, just use the drop downs and you can play with the different sprocket sizes and you can see what speed is in what gear and RPMs etc

Nup, -1T front on the SVS doesn't decrease top end, as on standard gearing it can't reach redline in 6th anyway.

With -1T I now get indicated 130ish just touching redline in 6th.

I used to run 14 tooth on the front & accelleration was vastly improved. It does make the bike a little buzzy, but it's fine
