Just wanted to say.......

I joined this forum on recommendation from a friend when I returned to UK, in order to meet some like minded bikers.
Well I have met a great bunch some of which no longer have or never had an SV including myself.
This evening Mark_h let me take his SV1000 for a blast and I would like to say your all bloody mental!
I'm in give me some more of that it's a proper comedy bike!
I rode it for 10-15 miles through some twisties and some straight ish bits and I smiled all the way, give it too much the rear either spins or the front goes skyward, give too little it's like riding a horse!
No power where you want it, all the power in the world where you don't want it, rubbish chassis and naff brakes! It's fantastic I want one! I want one now!!!!!!

When I got back on the Ace, awesome power, but it all feels a bit sterile now.

The 1000 isn't even the one most people here like, the 650 is a far better bike

Now I'd have thought you'd be smarter than to listen to the rumours of worse handling etc. Be interested to hear what, in your expert opinion, makes the 650 a "far better bike" given its more basic suspension and much less oomf.

Obviously with a suspension/brake upgrade it's a different story and you can get a "well sorted" 650 but 90%+ of them out there are bog standard with a lairy can. Given you usually have respected view of the world I'm interested in your statement.

So sort the more basic suspension out... doesn't take much to put it in front of the KYB rubbish on the SVthou!

Dunno what complaint is about SV1000 brakes though, nowt wrong with those if they're fettled.

Mine just need new pads and are a tad old-school could possibly do with a few more pistons etc. Also the Thunderace's brakes have been massively fettled by a brake system obsessive.

Think I'll stick with the 650, and the Raptor, less of a barge, more nimble and a whole lot more throttle happy, kangaroo bouncer.

4 is the correct number of pistons. Those calipers are fine for GSXR750's I think they can do a proper job on an SV even if it is a bit of a lardy one.

Those brakes are capable of doing a right proper job like. Just knocking back the glaze on the pads can make a massive difference.

The forks and shock on the raptor are worse than the KYB crap on the SVthou!
How many times you ridden one to make that fair comparison?

Who goes to try an SV1000?

-650 owners, find it not as flickable* and a bit heavier handling*
-People who have/had TL's that are getting on a bit
-People who have/had proper sportsbikes

The 650 handles like a BMX, give them a steering damper and lazy geometry and they'll find it heavy.
The TLs had sporty geometry, but were still heavy.
Obviously compared to a proper sportsbike a sports-tourer is going to feel a bit sluggish in the chuckaboutability department.

You can't argue they handle slower than a lot of bikes, but yea barge is harsh.

Really? Maxton's answer when I spoke to them about possible upgrades on SV1000 suspension - 'Leave it alone, it's good out of the factory'.

Correct, same as fitted to a couple of models back GSXR750 - they were good then. they're good now.

It, or you doesn't work properly. If you rode it like you do a four then it's you. SV1000 has an excellent spread of go, and the suspension only suffers from owners fiddlings, brakes as mentioned earlier are just fine. Do you have a later Ace with blue or gold spots? That would explain it.
