Bit of light reading - Caving and exploits of others

Clearly not mine this but found it when searching for some local caves. Boy did I find more than I bargained for! Really interesting read though I thought.

OK so after reading that might not have been the best time to go explore some local ones... ALONE! but hey ho...

I went in search of a cave called Queen's Parlour on the sandstone trail. I'd followed some vague instructions and found a cave at the point but it didn't seem like the one I'd seen. I came home though as I didn't want to blunder about looking for a cave I'd already been to. I read some new instructions and found a simpler way and realised it definitely wasn't the one I'd been in. I'm hoping to re-visit with a buddy for some light painting and stuff but it was pretty creepy alone (especially after having read the Crank Caverns page I'd posted in IB last week) had to explore every nook and cranny when I arrived and then I was reasonably sure the only way in and out was the one I'd seen so I was a little more at ease and set the camera up to take some pictures.

It is a tad tricky balancing painting the inside of the cave with light and judging the exposure time but these turned out OK:

My mum and dad used to do a fair bit of caving in their youth, this is them on the front of a book

Would make a good horror story/film if done right, interesting.

we have what is commonly known as the giants caves just outside Burntisland, they are very very old lime working mines with lots and lots of stalactites and stalagmites. there is also an underground lake along with vertical shafts and miles and miles of tunnelling. the navy used to use it for diving training and there is a plaque at one of the 'dive caves' stating so. the water is crystal clear. i have only ever been down twice, once with the Drake Fellowship with all the proper gear and the other when i moved to burntisland with some mates. it's a fascinating place. assailing down a pitch black shaft is fun, there is also a mud slide that you have to slide down to get to the lake. the lake goes on for further then a torch can shine and look very very deep. very near the start of the mines is a partially walled up tunnel that is filled with water and again is crystal clear, you can get to the lake that way but your going to get very very wet so best go in the other way and end by going threw the water filled tunnel.

one of the upper minings at the slate quarry was used as a dumping for old WWII ammunition, guns, etc.etc. it was sealed with tons and tons of slate.

some people have taken a few snaps but only of the upper section that was mined out during WWII to keep munitions in. http://www.freewebs.com/the_giants_cave/

the exiting stuff is further down into the mine on the right as you enter, this will take you down to the old mine.
