Default Car key cutting

Hey team!

I'd like to get a spare key cut for my 1999 BMW. A blank key even from Timpsons costs £35. I got a blank from somewhere else, but need to find a place that will cut it, and copy the transponder chip code across too.

Can you guys suggest anywhere? Please! Otherwise I've wasted money getting this blank!

Thanks!

I know my old BMWs could learn new keys so may not need to do any chip swapping, just google how to add a new key to your car. unofficialbmw.com was always the most useful back in the day.

As for getting it cut try an independent cobbler/key cutter rather than a franchise/chain as they are more likely to be accommodating ref cutting it. I would however get it known by your car before paying to get it cut as then if it's not a goer you can sell it on as an uncut blank.

While you can code the key to the car, you can't code the transponder chip in the key to the ignition.
New key time i am afraid, and you're looking at around £120 to do it.
Need any more info on that pm me and i'll fill you in.

Are you sure??

I got a new key, and as long as you have the old key to trigger the learning process it learned the new one and was happy. Doubtless varied model to model but I certainly didn't pay anyone £120 to add a new remote key to my E46 after it had the locks changed.

This is news to me; nobody else has said this!

I have the key that gets physically cut, and then the chip inside is cloned to be like the chip in my current car key. Is that not all?

There is a transponder chip in the key that is coded to the ignition, they are not transferrable between cars, and new ones have to be coded by bmw. You can code any key to unlock the doors, but it WILL not start the car.
You can get a key blank cut, but it has to go into a shell that has a transponder that is already coded to your car. If you could just cut new keys like that, there would be a lot more stolen BMWs around.

Go to your local BMW dealership & ask them if it can be coded.

That is exactly what I'm trying to avoid; they will charge £££££££££ and then ££££££££ + VAT

I'm guessing you didn't read what i wrote. Ask them if it can be done. Not, ask them to do it . . .
Ford coded mine for me, for free.
