i would get a quote for a years insurance first. also check your existing policy as it might include other bikes with owners permission and as long as the owner has insurance.

I've heard of people getting insurance and then cancelling it within 2 weeks for a full refund. Not sure how legit this approach is but it would mean you're covered and if you buy it you could just let it run.
Possibly related to distance selling regulations.

If his policy has cover for riding other bikes it would on be third party cover so his mate has to be ok with that.

So after the fruitless search of temp cover, my insurance company has advised I can ride it third party if it is insured by the owner. The cost of this is 0, nothing, bloody free but offering some extra payment for fully comp and they say no we don't do that. Makes no sense but I will be riding it as carefully as I have ever ridden a bike

Yeah, if it is offered by an insurer it will only ever be third party as that is the min legal requirement.
They won't do full comp as they haven't assessed the risk and accepted it etc. Some like ebike won't even offer that, when I was with them they said the reason was basically because they had loads of problems with new or inexperienced riders borrowing expensive bikes and chucking em down the road.

Well used it for the day, 2012 hyabusa 1300 with 1700 miles on the clock, well now 1800, handed back with the biggest grin and the knowing fact if I bought it, it would be a race between how long I would have my licence or how soon I arrived at work backwards in a ball of flames, lol great bike but holy ****
