Default Gap in vehicle tax/sorn

My car needed renewing today, and upon looking for the v11 I came across one for the sv. I have not ridden the bike since September and the tax ran out at the end of October. I have been online to either re tax or sorn but it will only allow this from the start of this month leaving a gap of a couple of months, and it states on the online form that there is a gap and the dvla may be in touch about this.

I think what happened was I opened the tax reminder in a bit of a rush when it came through the post, but thinking it my bike wasn't due for renewal thought it was for my sister in laws car. She could not get finance so my wife bought the car for her so it is actually in my wife's name and the number plate is very similar to my bikes number plate.

Anyone else left a gap in their bikes tax or sorn while they have not been using it?
Am I likely to get a fine through the door? I would have been happy to have back dated the tax, even though I have not used the bike.

Did you get £80 fine?

I have just resolved it. Phone dvla and explained and they advised I re tax the bike, then phone a number I was given to discuss arrears for the missed period.
Re taxed the bike on line, then phoned the number, I was charged an additional £13.50 for the two months missed to prevent getting a fine.

Paid the tax arrears for 2 months & the tax, plus a £20 penalty!

Oh right, did you pay the arrears over the phone or did it come through with the fine?

The chap on the phone said "you can pay the two months by card over the phone to avoid further penalties"

Maybe they are being more lenient at the moment with the recent change in tax disc rules then.
