Just found my lower radiator mount bracket has snapped. The alloy or whatever it is seems to be slightly softer that brie. I can't see how it could be repaired but has anyone got any ideas for repair or an alternative method to stop the bottom swinging around? Make a new bracket from the fan mount perhaps? Thinking about it, I can probably remove the fan as it's now a track bike.

You won't need the fan unless you ride over to someones pit after a track session to talk about the fun you had riding around with him, and don't shut off the bike because it doesn't have a starter. Bikes without starters are a PITA.
The broken bracket can be fixed with a piece of aluminum angle. If the repair angle is made of the same cheese as the original, use one guage heavier. Just a bit thicker. Decent quality aircraft alloys you could use thinner and it would still be stronger. It looks like the part still attached to the frame is bolted on? If so, it's easy. Remove the broken piece from the frame and save it for show and tell. Flatten the piece still attached to the fan so the repair angle will fit closely, clamp it in place, drill a hole and secure it temporarily. Drill 2, 3 or 4 holes through the repair angle in total, depending on what size rivets you intend to use. I'd use three 3/32" stainless pop rivets. If you 're willing and think you have the skills, I'll tell you how to locate the attachment hole to the frame. |

Thanks for the reply. I'm keeping the starter but the fan is going.
I think at the "drill a hole" point I'll have coolant on the floor as there is no space above the metal strip that the bracket is attached to. Even if the coolant stays where it should there isn't space for a rivet. I don't think the fan mount bracket is strong enough either, so I think I need an adhesive (epoxy?) that would work with the material and heat or find someone who can weld it. |

Yes, sorry, I don't know what I thought was looking at, but it wasn't the bottom of the radiator, where the original bracket is riveted on.
Another alternative might be to attach an angle to the fan mount bracket on the radiator, and another to the mount point on the head, then attach the two angles together. Welding would work too. With the fan weight gone, good epoxy might do. Last edited by wideguy; 19-04-15 at 02:48 PM. |

I think I've found a mate of a mate who should be able to weld it, so fingers crossed. Failing that the first mate should be able to fabricate something that uses one or more of the fan mounts. Either way I'm hoping to hand over the broken one and get it back repaired a few days later in exchange for a beer token...
