Default What to do with a bike....

....that has been standing for a long time.

My brother in law has a R reg GSXR 750 with minor damage but due to a large number of reasons I won't go into it has been off the road for a few years now . I was wondering what leaving it stood for that long will have done to the engine etc.

He need a new bike as it would appear bus passes in Bristol must be printed on gold or something as they cost a fortune, nothing fancy just practical (well he would like fancy but I doubt that will happen at the mo). My question is would the engine etc be salvageable so be could either get it running or sell it as a whole or would we be better off braking it for the rest of the bits?

My old GS500 was sat in the garage for about 2 1/2 years before I finally got round to selling it (kinda by accident!).
Simply put in a new battery, fresh petrol and started it up. Blew a ton of crap outta the back end for a bit, then took it round the block. Bit rough so then changed the oil and filter and took ot for a longer spin.

It got better with every mile and after about 20 was running fine.

Replaced a couple of corroded electrical connectors so things like the brake light/indicators etc worked OK and it flew through the mot.

Based on that I'd suggest just doing the bare minimum - new or charge battery, frech petrol, oil and filter then see what happens. If it's fooked then you've not forked out too much, and you may find that the ol' thing surprises you.
Far better to flog it as a runner.

As K said.

Also, might be worth mentionning to drain all fuel from the tank and engine. At this point check for any signs of corrosion/rust inside the tank (air + fuel + metal = corrosion). Fill it up with fresh petrol and it should be pretty much ready to go.

I'd change the oil as a matter of course, and check electrical connections. Obviously if it's been stood a while it'll need to go through an MOT so anything else should show up on that.
