Default Chain and sprocket life

Just had the bike in for a (re) service and it needs new chain and sprockets. Chain I was expecting as it's making a horrific noise, but I'm surprised about the sprockets. The set has done about 10k miles, does this sound about right?

if you don't have an oiler and you have been known to be a bit laz in lubing it, then that's probably about right, though not very good. If you have any kind of oiler and keep it topped up then that's very crap.

I was just given the option of a new chain / sprocket at 18,000km. Apparently it would have been OK (ish) until the next service but definitely have needed doing at 24k.

I haven't got an scottoiler but I'm fairly well behaved and reckon I lube it about every other trip. Can't speak for the previous owner though - it didn't have much oil left when I bought it so reckon they were probably a bit slack.

sprockets should be changed whenever you change you chain, they get run in together, if you don't change sprockets, the new chain will wear prematurely

Chain & sprocket life can be dramitically extended by good care and maintanence. A Scottoiler is the best option for lazy gits (like me).

What Randy o said. They go together (like bacon and eggs)and should be replaced together.Chain life varies greatly, but will be drastically shortened by inadequate lubing.poor chain adjustment, jerky riding style or enthusiastic use of max power.

Dammit, that's two out of four.

Really? I thought my chain was ok. I definitely believe in lube, but you're gonna have to take my word for that one.
