Default Nuts and Bolts and all things Threaded

Nuts and Bolts and all things Threaded,

Hi all , Just a quick question , im due a service at end of the month , and am looking at Cleaning the brakes and doing a general service , Just thinking is it best to replace nuts and bolts (old for new) or would using the old ones be OK,

I got a feeling its best to replace (I've already looked at Chewys Stuff)just wondering what the consensus was

Thanks in advance

No real need to replace, unless there damaged of course, but - if you want to replace with stainless then it's a good idea - don't forget to use copper grease or threadlock on the stainless fastners, differential corrosion and all that.

Also remember that the (I think front brake) bolts are a metric fine (M10*1.25). Most fastener stockists won't stock them and you end up having to go to specialists like hyperbolt (Expensive)

I don't want to try and belittle (is that even a word?) you, but I am assuming that you know what needs thread lock and what needs copper grease? Just asking as you were primarily asking about the brakes and I would not use lock thread on them.

Think it's recommended for the brake hangers is it not?

Errr, not that I am aware, I could of course be wrong. I use copper grease. The bolts are not under any sort of stress at all. I can not see any reason why they would need to be "welded" into position.

Vibration, maybe? I never threadlocked mine, but then I rarely threadlock anything. Couldn't hurt to do it.

I guess my argument to that would be that these bolts are exposed to the nasty weather as much as the brakes themselves are. Using copper grease ensures that the bolts are going to come out again using the standard tools rather than extractors and the likes.

Big 'ol bolts, even if they were to stick you could apply enough to break them free without risking the bolts.
