I suggest an Optimate. You can leave it on all winter charging as it goes into a mantainence cycle when the battery is good.

When is winter?

Sometimes you get beautiful biking days in January, December and March and crap days in July

Keep her taxed and keep her lit :P

I know you can leave an optimate on for a long time - cos I've got one and its great - but is there a "safe time limit" foro leaving it connected or can it be left on literally for ever ?

As I understand it because the optimate and other "intelligent" chargers monitor the voltage on the battery and test it while trickle charging it they will do it no harm at all if left connected indefinitely. Some more basic chargers just dump a load of current through the battery to charge it up and they can cause harm if left on for longer than recommended apparently.
