Default Tank drain repair - petrol safe glue?

Hi,

The drain pipe from the rim around the filler on the petrol tank on my curvy SV has snapped off.

Is this repairable or is it time for a new tank? Could I bodge it with silicone sealant or something? I'm pretty skint at the moment.

This is getting close to being the final straw with this bike, I think it's cursed.

Are you referring to the filler well drain? If yes:

Snapped or rusted through?
Never seen a broken one but I've seen a few that have rusted where the drain has become blocked and the drain tube filled with water and rusted away, if that's the case I doubt it'll glue anyway, but, if you think you can do it Araldite is fuel resistant.

I've had this problem, lets loads of water in the tank and caused running problems

What i did to bodge it was drilled a hole in a counter sunk M8 stainless allen bolt and glued it in the pipe and over the hole, with epoxy resin, being carfull i hadn't bloked the hole, i also cut a few slots in the head of the bolt to help drainage

I can get pics in the morning if you want

Morning all.

Plastic padding leak fix is pretty good at fixing leaking tanks. It's a two part mix, just make sure the area is clean by rubbing down with wet & dry paper before applying it......Most car accessory shops seem to stock it.

Cheers.

A useful heads-up to everyone

Make sure the drain is clear (blow down it through a piece of tube) and give it an occasional squirt of WD40 or similar water dispersant/protective.

Check the way the pipe runs from the back of the tank and isn't kinked or trapped.

Remember that it is a drain, and anything you put in the top should eventually drip out of the pipe under the swingarm pivot/clutch area, so be careful of anything getting onto the back tyre or brake.

PS - there are reliable sealants for fuel tanks, for example
http://www.lasaero.com/article/a-pr1500l
but it probably isn't the ideal for the leaking pipe problem
