Nope, well def wont when it's off or when the clutch isn't pulled in, it'll do nothing at all like that. Faulty, I'm not sure but i guess it wouldn't turn over either.

What happens if the tank has half a gallon of water in after you have drained the carbs?
The reason I said empty the tank into a bucket is that you can decant the clean petrol off the top of the water & reuse it..... Simples

If you have got water in your tank, check the drain hole at the top of it & also thepipes at the back of the tank under the front seat. I wrote about it here. http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=111512

If my bike didn't start once, I would not be suspecting half a gallon of water in my tank
After draining water from my carbs for the 2nd or 3rd time, I'd be checking my tank for water.

+1 to choke issues, if the choke is stuck off, it will run like a dream if its been warmed up, even bein in a van with the aircon on for a long drive could get enough warm air in the airbox to fire it up a bit however the first time its sat for a cold night and u try and start it without working chokes you will flood the cylinder and get a big bang when u let off the starter motor probably (also he may have warmed it up before bringin it down to u knowing it had cold start issues as mine can start moderately well off the choke for an hour or two after use still)... i know thats wot happened to mine just before one of my chokes jammed fully on instead

He said it won't start! How would you ride it to a garage?
Surely you would call breakdown recovery first?

(I remember hearing of someone whose bike wouldn't start so he had it recovered to a garage for £50 and the garage took a week to fit it in, then charged the battery and handed it back (after charging another £50) This is not a rant at garages being expensive, just a note to do things in the right order)

My bike refused to start when cold and after draining the battery and recharging it 3 times i took carbs off and found the choke plungers were stuck solid so i unstuck them and it started first time with a working choke.
