Some good advice from our learned friends
Hate to admit it but PC World have gotten better (and cheaper) over the years and might be worth a look. You could also try Dell, or the one I use - eBuyer
Pay particular attention to the "intended use" of the laptop.
If you buy a laptop with Vista on it, you'll need AT LEAST 1GB of RAM (preferably more), cos the laptop's graphics chip will take a chunk of that memory for video processing. Bear that in mind ... I think they take something like 256MB, so that's a QUARTER of your available RAM gone as soon as you boot it up
Don't write off Acer ... I've got an Acer laptop that has served me well for over 2 years now without a problem. I've also purchased Acer laptops for several friends and family (not at my expense of course! LOL) and none of them have had any problems. Although I know my mum had to use Acer Support for her desktop and they were excellent.

Anyway ... my 2 cents worth

Pete

Last year I bought a new work laptop from PCW. Now as it was my only machine it had to have at least 2Gb RAM and 120Gb hard drive. The machine cost me £700, but you should be able to find that for about £500 now.

I'm contemplating a laptop for my son, as he starts Uni later this month, but he has a powerful (3Gb Processor, 4Gb RAM & 250Gb HDD) desktop machine anyway. It's my old one which he has bit by bit upgraded.

But PCW would be my first port of call, get some idea of specs & prices then see what deals you can find. Never be scared of going back to PCW and asking for a deal, you may be surprised what you can get.

Also, they are the same company as Currys (and Dixons/Currys Digital) who sometimes have the same stuff at lower prices as they tend not to shift it as fast. Worth a look.....

Cant go wrong with Toshiba's. They are cheap, but very sturdy. I've had no problems with mine, and my freind brought one last year for uni, and he had no problems either

Do make sure its bundled with microsoft word, excel etc etc. Whats your sister studying? You might be able to get some other programs thrown in that are relevant to her course.

Does it have to be a laptop? Desktops are far easy to upgrade and cost less, and they don't get thrown around in bags like laptops do. My missus has a fujitsu and it's well battered. Three years old and the screen is falling to bits. That's par for the course if you take it everywhere.

I have a thinkpad from work. Much sturdier and very nice to use. But they are pricey.

Our fujitsu laptop was rubbish from the start. Hasn't held a charge from day 1, the screen intermitently comes on / off because the power cable socket is loose.

Just order and received a new laptop from Dell. Looks the business

When your at uni, a laptop is a great idea. You can take it into uni (so you can work in the library - in my experiance, using the computers in the uni libraries is only possible if you manage to get one early on in the day!), you can take it home, you can store it away safley (theft of students gear is high) and its...cool
