This months WHAT LAPTOP has a whole section on 'what laptop' to buy for a student and also best buy laptops for uncder £399.00(sih). Recommend you have a read there. Thats what I read before I purchased mine a couple of years ago.

cheers guys for all the advice, she def needs a laptop rather than a desktop, I've seen her digs and she ain't got room to swing a cat. All she really needs is basic dvd/cd playback for watching films and listening to toones, browsing the .net and using MSN and such. She'll need an office package. As for OS's I'm not too keen on Vista from what I had already heard sofar, I'd prob go for XP Pro as thats what I'm on and I find it V user friendly. Screen doesnt need to be massive neither does the onboard sound need to be top of range, just a basic run of the mill laptop with decent enough, storage at least 120gb, at least 1gb ram, I think the dual core processor would be good for her as she does a lot of mutli tasking, defintely needs to be sturdy as she's not the most careful, clumsy would be the best description I can use for her..LOLOL. Would have to be wireless enabled. I can pretty much sort her out for software (except I would prefer get her her own copy of windows XP). A good package with printer/camera option would be ideal but would buy seperately for better quality/value. Will have a look out for the 'WHAT LAPTOP' mag and see what I can find.

I have a Sony Vaoi (VGN-S1HP) and ive had no problems with it whatsoever. Ive had it since i started univeristy in 2004 and it has been used everyday since I bought it. It loads up quick, can cope with lots of things open at once..Ive just never had anything go wrong (touch wood!). Infact, the only thing "wrong" with it (if you can even call it that), is the wireless switch for the internet broke a couple of months ago and it now stuck on. I cant turn it off (but thats not a problem because i turn it on all the time anyway).

The service from Sony was brilliant - I rang them and they got back to me within 24 hours and explained their full repair service etc etc. I didnt have any money to fix it (so the wireless bit is still busted).

All in all, A great laptop and I would buy another one.

Perhaps a bit pricey, but have you considered a Mac? Excellent for the sort of media stuff you described and MS Office is available for Mac OS if standard software isn't enough. Takes a bit of getting used to if you're an MS person, but maybe a second hand one (i.e pre intel) would to keep cost down?

got to laptopsdirect.co.uk

Acer, Toshiba, HP are all good makes.

Ive got a Acer and ive bought a couple of HPs which have an excellent build quality in my experience. You could also look at people who sell Dell refurbed laptops, they are majorly cut down in price but have not actually been used as such, possibly ordered then canceled before delivery etc etc..
