i'm pretty sure that this is the official suzuki service schedule.

as you can see there is nothing to say that they should grease the swingarm or linkages and all that is mentioned is 'rear suspension' which is a bit ambiguous.

Owenski, what you're describing is a dealer who is not doing the job properly. Unfortunately there are far too many of those around.

Bibio, read the guide at the bottom of the page it tells you what 'I' means. Dont think its ambiguous TBH.

Trouble is even when a dealer is inspecting it, the lubricate/clean/replace as necessary bit isnt included in the price. My post seems to have been taken as something to have an argument about, but its not. All Im saying is owners who rely on 'servicing' to maintain thier bikes, realise that what dealers do for thier standard pricing isnt sufficient. You have get familiar with that sheet above and either learn how to do the other bits in between, yourself or pay the dealer more to do it. A good dealer should be inspecting it and telling you it needs done, as we can see here and as I have learned to my cost also, many dont.

Going back to answer this question now Im in work and have the figures.

I've spent:
£546.25 on modification and customisation
£85.95 on general service items (plugs oil filters fluids etc etc)

Those two are the two I've willingly spent, I'm not too far over my over all budget with those two figures on top of the price of the bike.
However I've also had to spend £387.79 on replacing knackard items I never thought would need attention, those things include:
Broken rear subframe,
Broken LH hanger,
Badly pitted fork stations up the top (within travel of seals),
Dead rear shock,
Rear linkage and Swingarm fubar.

Had I had opportunity to strip the bike and inspect it all first then I think I'd have changed my mind about the front end swap and other selected modifications (braided lines, hugger, shortly levers) I'd have also chosen to upgrade like for like. For example I could tell the rear shock was dead just from the ride home so I bought a zxr shock as a replacement, I could have saved £30 and bought an Sv one instead had I waited to see the extent of the damage.
However we live and learn and despite the little things like that I would have done differently I can still be happy to know that at the end of it I'll have an SV in fantastic condition with a few tasty mods along its way and purely because of the low initial cost of the bike I think I'd have still struggled to find a 55 plate SV for the same overall price.

Chris,

Do you have a workshop or do you work from home servicing bikes?

In fairness your home is a workshop, its not like your bog standard family garage where you've one tool box of spanners, you've got almost everything any back street garage would have.

His garage is not just back street workshop equipped, he looks the part too. Give him a shave, fluff up his hair a wee bit, couple of ear rings...
