Italian litre twins are a lot more expensive though and are somewhat more temperamental. If I wanted a budget litre twin commuter, for example, i'd consider the SV. In fact, is there any competition?

But the OP said, a weekend toy, not a commuter.

Having tried my bros Mille, a nice well looked after factory would do me, plus of course a gixxer 750 for weekday hoons

If you are jumping on a bike with 100bhp+, then imo it would be better if you had some riding experience.

Otherwise you will very easily get yourself into trouble in speed (easy to do over 100mph, without realizing and loose your license)/corners (too quickly, heavier bike to throw around, not knowing where slow down, apex, where to get on the power, etc)/braking (Better brakes for you to lock the front with).

Agreed - I think there is much more enjoyment to be had getting used to a lower hp bike and building up to the point of wringing its neck before you jump onto a high hp machine. I regularly borrow my brother-in-laws curvy SV and just love the way you can ride it hard without being the wrong side of 100mph all the time - you can't really do that on the 'Bird

Its not the power that will get you, its the weight and torque delivery you need to be aware of in the bendy bits and especially in the wet. They don't sound/feel fast and then you look at the speedo.............. and cackle and whoop.

Its not your 1st bike? So go for it if thats what you want.

Make sure you get one with decent cans.

you do need a pretty senisitive right hand however. the engine breaking is quite potent and on the other side so is the accelaration.

and decent cans are a must. if you cant set of car alarms with em keep shopping

btw why has no one mentioned Falco's yet?
