My 2p's worth....
Depends what you want from biking. If you want to be a "pin the throttle and head down" rider, than sure go for the 1000cc. good umph for the cash, but then retrospectivly, it'll only be as quick as a modern 600cc, just a lot more usable power lower in the revs. tbh, i wouldn't have a 1000cc for my first bike. Asking for trouble. He needs to learn HOW to ride a bike before jumping in head first. A 650 is a much better basis to learn bike control, but IMO u'll get bored of the power after a year. But the 650 is the better bike for the twisties.... But then again, an Aprilia RS250 is far superiour to a SV650S, so its respective.... IMO, i'd get your license, and blag a go on a few bikes, see what you like. Riding say a 1000cc VTwin over a IL4 SS600cc is a completly different riding experience. Bit like driving a TDI car Vs a Honda VTEC...... Ones instant umph, the other needs the tittes ragged out of it. Me personnally, i'd take the smaller bike, learn to ride properly, then go for the motorway muncher... But then if you REALLY want a 1000cc twin, go for the proper Suzuki Twin, the TL1000S... But then again on top of that, i'd rather have an Honda VTR, or something Italian and spunky.... Last edited by Daimo; 29-05-09 at 02:08 PM. |

The SV1000's not scary powerful though, it would be absolutely fine for a new rider. It's not a sportsbike really, it's intended to be easy to ride. The 650 is fun because you have to bounce off the limiter all the time to keep up, but unless you're made of money I'd go straight for the 1000 and save swapping in like 2 months time.

I'd go for a 'Busa, myself.
In all honesty though, you could buy a Desmo but it's still only going to go as fast as you want it to/dare to go. Aslong as you have some self control you'll be fine. |

You can overcook it on a 650 too, very easily. Having a smaller bike won't save you from taking corners too fast.

perhaps, but something with a sharp surprising power-band or bad handling or a really twitchy throttle would be hard for a beginner to master, but neither the 650 nor the 1000 fall into this category. I think the most important part is the attitude of the rider. People still kill themselves on 125s.

I'd have to agree with suzsv on that, while you can easily run into a corner too hot on a 650, a 1000 (in most cases) will effortlessly run in too hot, partly due to the extra power/torque/horsepowers/hamster wheels/nuclear reactors etc.. But also due to the gearing. I've been cruising on the motorway, then looked down and thought "how the feck did I reach 110 without realising?!"
The 650 is ever so slightly more forgiving if you tram it into a corner, but if he's good with self control & doesn't become over confident too quickly, an sv1000 will prolly be alright for him? The sad thing is that he'll never have the chance to acclimatise to a 600/650 and then fully appreciate/enjoy the step up to a 1000... Guess the real issue here is experience < power = risk?
